Would you believe that after all the plant hangers I have made, I have never actually hung one in my own home???

We are in our own home and I feel it’s ok for me to drill a hole in the ceiling and hang one of my plant hangers. I have also recently got more into my plants and have enjoyed doing some research of which plant would suit our home.

So first things first, there are several ways to hang plants in your home but today I will discuss hanging from the ceiling. Another reason I have always shied away from this is the worry that it would be too big a task for me. But after some extensive research for this post, I feel reassured that it’s actually not that tedious a task and won’t take longer than 15 minutes.

Not only do hanging plants add beauty and freshness to a place and but hanging them also saves a lot of space and keeps it safe from children and pets.

1~Find the Perfect Spot to Hang the Plants

Two important things to consider are your plants needs ie. how much sunlight it needs and accessibility for you to be able to drill for a hook easily.

2~Select the Appropriate Plants for Hanging

There is definitely plenty of information on the internet as well as many online plant shops that offer extensive information on different types of plants depending on how experienced you are, which room you will place it in, light levels, size, pet & children friendly.

Some that I have found helpful and ordered my own plants from are:

3~Choose your pot and hanger

There is great variety of hanging planters. You will find them in all different styles, sizes and materials. You will find more affordable ones made of plastic which also have the added benefit of being lightweight. A favourite pot company of mine is Dutch company Elho. They have such lovely designs and colours and their plastic pots are such lovely quality that they don’t look plasticky and they are an eco-conscious company as their pots are made with recycled plastic and with own wind energy.

Handmade ceramics will cost more and will be a bit heavier so make sure you use the appropriate anchor in your ceiling too.

Some pots will come with hangers already or you can purchase a macrame plant hanger and slip your favourite pot in. You can head to my Etsy shop where you will find a selection of plant hangers on their own or paired up with ceramic pots from my collaboration with ceramic artist Rani from The Ceramic Studio.

Whatever pot you choose, remember to consider drainage. Ideally you can place a plastic pot with drainage holes within your decorative pot so that you can remove this to water your plant and let it drain through. What you don’t want is a plant with drainage holes leaking all over your floor.

3~What you will need to hang from the ceiling

Ok, so let’s get hanging.

You will need:

  • A drill

  • Hooks with toggle wings for dry wall ceiling.

I got these, but I have seen a few people use these more decorative hooks too.

  • Ladder

  • Eye protection

  • Friend

Steps:

  1. Mark the spot where you want your planter to hang from. Make sure you keep adequate distance from the wall/s and if you are hanging more than one plant, be careful to space adequately from each other.

  2. Attach your washer to the hook. Grab your spring toggle, place it on top of the hook and turn clockwise.

  3. Drill a hole with the drill bit. Ensure your bit is slightly smaller than the screw of your hook so that the hook fits securely.

  4. Grab a stepladder and climb up to place your spring toggle into the hole you've just drilled. Hold the wings together as you push the bolt into the ceiling. You'll hear a click once it's sprung out. Pull and twist your hook up so the washer is flush with the roof.

  5. Hang your plant!

This video by Bunnings Warehouse makes it look super easy and they also have a step by step on their blog. Whatever you prefer!

Hope this helps! Any questions do get in touch, am always happy to help if I can. I am by no means and expert in construction so please be sure to check what type of ceiling you have and if a spring toggle is suitable as well as check how much your plant hanger weighs and how much weight your hook can support.
